Middle School: Week of Jan 22

Math: This week Da Sprouts focused on application problems. They solved word problems in order to find “the part” and some to find “the percent”. Next week they will focus on finding “the whole”. Evershrooms completed a performance task that required students to order inventory for a lab and compare mixed solutions of disinfectant. This helped prepare them for the unit check in they took Wednesday. Polar Bears finished their unit on angles this week with a lesson on similar triangles. Water, Water Everywhere! This week, we investigated what many rocky seashores offer…shelter and food for some of the world’s most adaptable creatures in the intertidal zones. (oh! how we wish we had tidal pools to explore in our neighborhood!) The ecosystem hangs on for dear life as the tides ebb and flow….and what creates tides? We learned that the ocean is always moving by the force of winds and currents and especially the pull of the moon’s gravitation creating 2 high tides and two low tides on earth each day. Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group reviewed telling time to the hour, half hour and quarter hour and are working hard to determine time to the minute with precision! The crew also put our handmade paper clocks to use and counted all the way around an hour, minute by minute, and learned to play a new partner game called Tick Tock. Ms. Kelly’s math group began division this week! General News Look for an email describing the students’ at-home theme project: collecting and describing 15 rocks over the course of the quarter. We held off on sending them home on Monday so we could model/practice with students before they started working at home. (Your child should be bringing home a supplemental resource packet to help with identification!) Middle School: Week of Jan 15

Math: During this short week Da Sprouts learned how to convert fractions to decimals to percents on Tuesday. Wednesday they learned how to use tape diagrams and proportions to solve percents. Thursday the complete task cards to review. Evershrooms focused on non-portional relationships this week. They learned how to represent them using verbal descriptions, equations, tables, and graphs. Polar Bears learned that the interior angles of a triangle add up to 180 degrees. They used that fact to find missing angle measures and to solve equations.
