This week in Alpha… All shirts are potential AHB shirts!!! Around the World in 60 Days… This week Alphas visited the second largest continent in the world: AFRICA. We plotted our maps with climate information and topography – we plotted the world’s longest river, the Nile, as well as Africa’s highest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro. Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group counted piggy banks and compared collections of coins, solved money word problems, practiced balancing scales with coins and learned a new math game called “Scoop & Graph”. On Thursday they took their money unit test (ROCKED IT) and graphing pre-test. All gears are in motion to finish the year off strong! Ms. Kelly’s math group explored how to represent fractions on a number line by reviewing dividing a whole, like a circle or rectangle, into equal parts and selecting a fraction. General News Reading/Writing Update This week in ELA we explored present-day Nigerian culture in depth. After reviewing our study guide, reading chapter 17 together in class, and having our Monday discussion we moved on to learning all about Pidgin English. We learned the definition of dialect (an accent or language specific to a group of people or region) and watched two videos about Pidgin and Cockney – two dialects mentioned in the book – and explored the history of Pidgin English in Africa. Middle School: Week of 4/22

Math: Da Sprouts each worked at their own pace to finish 3 activities. First was a booklet that used their knowledge of finding area of rectangles to figure out how to find the area of triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids. Second and a solve and color practicing how to find the area of triangles. The third was a spin to win activity practicing how to find the area of quadrilaterals. Rainy days and Tuesdays, never get us down… Around the World in 60 Days… We headed to Europe this week! Visiting the second smallest continent we discovered that the Ural Mountains separate Europe from Asia. And as we detailed our own maps we saw that there are several seas with interesting names that surround a good part of the westward jutting peninsulas.
