Middle School: Week of Oct 23

Math: On Monday Da Sprouts each wrote an integer subtraction problem and created a poster to model the equation using counters. After a week of learning how to model integer addition and subtraction, they started learning the algorithm to add integers. They practiced integer addition using whichever method they wanted (counters, number lines, or the algorithm) on Wednesday. EverShrooms practiced writing inequalities on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday we were down to only two EverShrooms, so they worked on reviewing the inequalities unit. Thursday, Da Sprouts and EverShrooms had a Stock Market Game lesson on diversification and then applied that strategy […]

Middle School: Week of Oct 16

Math: Da Sprouts started their new unit over integer operations. Tuesday they learned how to add integers using counters and a number line. Wednesday they did the same thing but subtraction. Thursday they made necklaces that represented integer addition problems where their answer was their age! EverShrooms were introduced to inequalities on Tuesday and extended to solving two step inequalities on Wednesday. On Thursday they continued practicing solving inequalities with a solve and color. Polar Bears learned the definition of a function and how to identify functions on Tuesday. Wednesday they then studied slope. Thursday they used two points to

Middle School: Week of Sept 25

Math: Da Sprouts worked Monday through Wednesday on dividing fractions and applications of dividing fractions. On Thursday they started their first performance task. A performance task is a scenario they must tackle on their own without any notes and only slight assistance from me. This particular performance task was to adjust a given recipe to low fat, low carb, high protein, and smaller versions. EverShrooms worked all week on two-step equations. They solved some involving integers, they completed application problems, and wrote equations based on scenarios. Polar Bears started the week with a game of BINGO to practice solving equations.

Middle School: Week of Sept 18

Math: Da Sprouts had a lesson over dividing by a decimal on Monday. Tuesday, they split into two groups. One group had a direct teach over adding and subtracting fractions while the other group worked in pairs to complete 8 different stations with adding and subtracting fraction problems. Wednesday everyone had a lesson over multiplying fractions and how to implement the “hash-slinging slasher”. The hash-slinging slasher is a inside Spongebob joke and is what Ms. Lorrie calls reducing the fractions first before multiplying. EverShrooms had lessons over simplifying expressions, solving one-step equations, and solving two-step equations. Polar Bears had a

Middle School: Week of Sept 11

Math: Da Sprouts had a review exercise on Monday where they had to find the errors in imaginary student’s mistakes. On Tuesday they had their first middle school check in! In middle school, all answers must be justified with math work, a picture, or words. It took a few tries for some students to make that adjustment, but they all turned in beautiful justifications! Wednesday we moved on to review lessons of multiplying and dividing decimals. EverShrooms first had a scavenger hunt to practice rational operations. Next, they completed an error analysis, like Da Sprouts. Wednesday was their check in.
