2nd: Week of Oct 20

We kicked off our Addition & Subtraction Unit by learning about (and using snap cubes to create models of) fact families! We reviewed the commutative property of addition – it does not matter which addend comes first. We then used our sum to create matching subtraction sentences within the same fact family. On Thursday we worked so hard flipping addition problems to create groups of ten. 10 is such a friendly number to work with that once we formed a group of ten, adding the leftovers to it is easy peasy. In phonics this week we studied possessives. We learned […]

Compasses are cool… What’s Around Me? This week, we reviewed what’s inside us and what we, and all humans, need to thrive. Alphas learned that we are going to explore many regions across our continent of North America to learn about their resources and how people use them. We learned that ancient humans hunted and gathered their food – the technology they had came from the sun – it always came up from the same direction. The word “East” comes from an old word for dawn. The word “North” comes from an old word for “the left!” Alphas discovered that

We are closing in on Quarter 1! In math we continue to compose, decompose, and compare numbers to the thousandth place. Next week will be a mix of skip counting practice, game days to reinforce place value concepts, and our second unit assessment! Here we come!! It was a busy week in phonics this week! We learned about twin letters: consonants that are doubled following syllables with short vowel sounds. Which consonants should we double, you ask? Silly Zebras Love Fries (s, z, l, f). We also learned that if twin letters come after an “a,” the vowel sound is

This Week in Alpha “What’s Inside Me” this week? OUR Digestive System! Alphas knew that we feed our bodies with food, but the nutrients in an apple can’t feed our bodies until we break it down. Digestion is all about breaking down and absorbing. Breaking down begins in the mouth. We took a gander at our mouths to get a view of what’s going on in there… We spotted tongues, teeth, uvula… Alphas made a diagram of the anatomy of a mouth! We did a little experiment with pretzels. We pretended our fingers were “fingers” and broke the pretzels into
