Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group delved deep into geometry by looking at 2D & 3D shapes, noting attributes, and asking some key questions (what makes a rhombus different than a square?) We also updated our math journals with key vocabulary for the unit. We reviewed polygons and quadrilaterals and whizzed through several sorts! We learned new geometry games and enjoyed a couple of game days. Some chose to use this time reviewing math facts! Ms. Kelly is so proud of her math group! Word problems are the HARDEST! Everyday we practice. And practicing everyday is not easy! But it’s […]

Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group wrapped up measurement, reviewed telling time and took their unit test. Now we will begin geometry! Ms. Kelly’s math group will be wrapping up their division unit next week and are squeezing in just a bit more practice. It has been division work, multi-step word problem and multiplication fluency practice extravaganza all week! Literacy – In reading, book clubs continue to run smoothly- one group just began a new one- Bunnicula! Lots of word work is always happening, including contractions and syllabication this week, using our low tech “computers” to make words. We are

Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group measured big things by “marking the spot” that our ruler ends with a finger and lining it up again without leaving any space in between. We also had fun making lots of conversions, such as feet into yards. We had Word Problem Wednesday and solved measurement problems using open number lines in partners and presented our results. So proud of the level of communication and thought process developing in this crew. At the end of the week we discussed capacity and area. We studied polygons and determined their area, then made some of our

Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group measured the room! We talked about standard units of measurement and put our rulers, measuring tape and yard stick to work. We compared lengths! The Beta 1’s were challenged to order themselves by height – silently! They rose to the challenge. We practiced our measuring skills while pivoting between inches and centimeters. On Tuesday the crew practiced addition and subtraction facts – both one and two digit! Thursday, we did a smorgasbord of measuring activities! From measuring items from a junk drawer, to partnering and answering discussion questions and solving measurement challenges! Ms. Kelly’s

2nd/3rd: Week of Jan 22

Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group worked on solving situations having to do with time. We created number lines to help us solve elapsed time problems and did another digital/analog mix and mingle to find new partners for the day (and for fun!) We discussed AM vs PM and completed different activities that take “about a minute” and “about an hour.” We made a human timeline and put ourselves in order based on the series of events in a daily schedule. After spending some more time figuring out situation problems involving elapsed time – they’re working hard and almost have
