2nd/3rd: Week of Apr 15

Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group was formally introduced to our final coin: the half dollar. We practiced identifying and counting them, along with other coins. We learned several new money math games and had a couple of game days – always a hit! In between there was a lively discussion about spending vs saving and giving to charity. Midweek, our math minds went to work solving coin riddles and money word problems. We also made a simple bar graph showing the types of shoes we were wearing and used our data to draw conclusions about the most & least […]

Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group inspected quarters this week! We found the tails side to be very interesting – we found ones that honor states, a national park, and other interesting places. The Betas are getting pretty great at counting mixed coins. We also discussed spending and wants vs needs. We split into groups and solved several scenarios involving budgets, needs and wants. The Betas did a great job of cooperating, listening to each other and sharing the group responsibilities. Ms. Kelly’s math group kept plugging away at finding area and perimeter for those pesky rectilinear shapes with missing

Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group launched our unit on money this week! We reviewed penny, nickel and dime values, examined their physical attributes, then practiced identifying heads and tails of each. We practiced counting them and learned 2 new math games! The Beta’s are doing a great job of recalling coin facts and the practice of counting mixed coins is proving beneficial. Ms. Kelly’s math group began perimeter on Monday! Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape. For example, if you walk around the edge of a playground, you’re measuring its perimeter. Area is the amount

Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group reviewed geometry vocabulary, 3D shape attributes and played with fractions! We wrapped up our geometry unit by learning about perimeter. We also took our Unit 6 test and our Unit 7 pre-assessment. SO excited to move on to money! Ms. Kelly’s math group jumped right back into our multi step word problem warm up before delving into using the distributive property to find the area of a rectangle. The distributive property states that you can break apart a factor into addends and multiply each addend by the other factor to get a product. So,

2nd/3rd: Week of Mar 4

Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group talked about fractions & how we can divide plane shapes equally. We’re getting great at writing them, remembering that the bigger number always goes on the bottom. Ms. Kelly’s math group dove into the concept of area. We learned that area is the amount of space within a 2D shape. It is measured in square units, such as cm², m², etc. We practiced finding the area of a rectangle two ways- by tiling and by multiplying the length and the width. We also brought out the tiles to create some area models before jumping
