Math This week, Ms. Andrea’s math group dove into Unit 3! We’re going to focus on addition and subtraction through the end of the year, highlighting and practicing strategies as we go! This week we practiced “making a ten.” By the end of the week, we were attempting this feat using mental math. Ms. Kelly’s math group reviewed and practiced adding two 3 digit numbers on a number line as well as using the standard algorithm. We added a Math Power Journal this week to squeeze in just a little more challenge for those few extra minutes we have left […]

Math – This week, Ms. Andrea’s math group worked hard writing, reading, ordering and comparing numbers in the hundreds & thousands. We learned two new games and embraced a small group cooperative challenge that required us to sort and compare digits. Ms. Kelly’s math group loves being the teacher! Every day we warm up our math brains with a math challenge that the kids take ownership over, writing and talking through what they are doing on the board while the other kids watch or assist. Then we are ready to jump into the work! This week we practiced rounding numbers

Math This week, Ms. Andrea’s math group warmed up their math minds by writing 3 digit numbers in standard form, solving a plethora of place value riddles! The kiddos have been building numbers into the thousands and also practiced identifying the value of a digit based on its placement, as well as decomposing large numbers by writing them in expanded form. This busy group also read and illustrated three and four digit numbers using place value blocks. They found that 0 can sometimes be an important placeholder in a number. Math – Ms. Andrea’s math crew “tallied the room” – including the number of buttons, fingers, and creepy crawlies, examined sequences of numbers to find their pattern and predict the next number in the sequence (skip counting by 2’s, 5’s & 10’s) and played a new game with a called 100 Frame Fill Up where they raced each other to reach 100 (exactly!), skip counting all the way there. Ms. Kelly’s math group is building their place value skills to the 100 thousands by playing partner games, practicing how to convert a number and write it with a different place
