Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group measured the room! We talked about standard units of measurement and put our rulers, measuring tape and yard stick to work. We compared lengths! The Beta 1’s were challenged to order themselves by height – silently! They rose to the challenge. We practiced our measuring skills while pivoting between inches and centimeters. Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group worked on solving situations having to do with time. We created number lines to help us solve elapsed time problems and did another digital/analog mix and mingle to find new partners for the day (and for fun!) We discussed AM vs PM and completed different activities that take “about a minute” and “about an hour.” We made a human timeline and put ourselves in order based on the series of events in a daily schedule. Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group reviewed telling time to the hour, half hour and quarter hour and are working hard to determine time to the minute with precision! The crew also put our handmade paper clocks to use and counted all the way around an hour, minute by minute, and learned to play a new partner game called Tick Tock. Ms. Kelly’s math group began division this week! Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group launched their time unit by creating a giant clock on the rug as well as their own clocks. We refreshed our memories of reading analog time by the half hour, quarter hour, counting by 5’s – down to the minute. We played partner games with dice and spinners for even more practice. Happy to report that it’s all coming back to us! This year we’ll focus on precision and tackle some more complicated story problems dealing with time. Ms. Kelly’s math group is wrapping up their multiplication strategies unit (Next week we begin division!)

Math – Ms. Andrea’s math group finally officially learned to subtract with regrouping! We call it: trading down. The Betas are off to a great start – so proud of them!! On Wednesday we solved many addition and subtraction story problems – with regrouping – independently and in partners. We came together at the end to explain our thinking. At the end of the week we practiced a couple of new strategies for adding triple digit numbers: using place value to break up the numbers (much like expanded form) and adding/subtracting from one number to make it easier to work
